What is Wegovy®?

Wegovy® is an injectable medication that is FDA-approved for weight loss. Its active ingredient is semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist medication.

How does Wegovy® work?

Wegovy® mimics a natural hormone, GLP-1, that helps control your appetite by making you feel full and signaling when to stop eating. It also slows digestion, so you stay full longer after meals.

Will insurance cover Wegovy®?

How a GLP-1 Works

Semaglutide mimics the effects of the GLP-1 hormone. It works by:

Wegovy® medication
  • Enhancing insulin secretion and inhibiting glucagon release.
  • Reducing appetite.
  • Slowing the movement of food through the gut.
  • Signaling a feeling of fullness.

As a result, you feel fuller faster, which can ultimately lead to sustained weight loss.

How to inject Wegovy®?

To inject Wegovy®, first clean the injection site on your abdomen, thigh, or upper arm with an alcohol swab. Remove the cap from the prefilled pen and hold it against your skin. Press and hold the injector button until you hear a click, then wait for a second click to ensure the full dose is delivered—this usually takes about 5-10 seconds. Afterward, remove the pen and dispose of it properly. Rotate your injection sites each week to avoid irritation.

How long can you take Wegovy® for weight loss?

You can take Wegovy® for as long as it continues to be effective and safe for your weight loss journey. It’s designed for long-term use, and many people stay on it as long as they’re seeing benefits and not experiencing significant side effects. Your doctor or clinician will regularly review your progress to determine if continuing Wegovy® is right for you.

What are the doses of Wegovy®?

Wegovy® dosing typically starts at 0.25 mg for the first four weeks to help your body adjust. The dose then increases every four weeks—from 0.5 mg to 1 mg, then 1.7 mg, and finally to 2.4 mg, which is the maintenance dose. Once you reach the right dose for you, this is generally the dosage you’ll stick to long-term. The gradual increase helps minimize side effects and ensures a smooth adjustment.
